While the human eye might not notice any difference in light intensity or subtle shifts in spectrum over as few as six months, our research demonstrates that your plant will. Burning lamps for 12 or more hours every day diminishes both intensity and spectrum. This happens with all lamp brands as the chemical reactions within the arc tube (which create the light and spectrum) deteriorate over time. Unlike the sun, man-made bulbs do wear out! Plants are quick to recognize these subtle changes. For example, think of putting an outdoor vegetable garden in a semi-shady spot. Sure, the plants may grow, but not to their optimum potential. For fuller, thicker vegetative growth and more blossoms yielding abundant crops, bulb replacement should be part of a regular maintenance schedule. Keep old working bulbs as possible supplemental light for mother plants or other plants that do not require aggressive growth. Eye Hortilux recently published their infographic and write up results on the effectiveness of using your digital ballast's dimming feature. What they found was that you are much better off using the correct wattage bulb rather than dimming a higher wattage bulb to 40%, 50%, or 60%. Their spectral distribution charts show that when the bulb is dimmed the spectral makeup of your light is greatly reduced compared to running it at 100%. This not only means you're decreasing in light intensity, but almost exponentially decreasing the coverage of spectrum your bulb targets.
