Types of LED Fixtures

Commercial Top Lights

Bar-style fixtures cover a 4x4 to 5x5 canopy from one hanging point. The Gavita CT 2000e puts out 2,000 µmol/s from 650W, and the ThinkGrow Model-H Plus reaches 2,160 µmol/s at 720W. Divide output by draw to compare efficacy: the CT 2000e works out to about 3.1 µmol/J. Gavita and ThinkGrow also build 208-480V and 347-480V versions for rooms on commercial power.

Tent and Home Grow Fixtures

AC Infinity IONBOARD and IONFRAME lights use Samsung LM301 diodes, from the 100W S22 for a 2x2 to the 1000W EVO10 for a 5x5. HLG Diablo, Gorilla Xi and PhotonTek fixtures fill the same range.

Supplemental, UV and Clone Bars

UV and far red bars add wavelengths a white fixture leaves out, like the AC Infinity IONBEAM U4 and HLG 30W UVA. Low-wattage bars such as the ThinkGrow Model-C light clones. Lower branches get their own layer from under-canopy grow lights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many watts per square foot for LED grow lights?

Plan on about 20 watts per square foot for veg and 30 for flower, give or take 10%. Measure the canopy, not the whole room, and use the fixture's actual draw. A 4x8 bench in a 5x10 room is a 32 square foot lighting job, not 50.

What size LED grow light for a 4x4 tent?

About 480 watts of true LED draw for flower, with 432 to 528 watts inside the 10% band, and about 320 watts for veg. Fixtures like the AC Infinity IONFRAME EVO6 at 500W or the iLuminar iLogic6 at 330W are sized for that footprint.

Do LED grow lights use a lot of electricity?

They use less than the HID lamps they replace. Our LED vs CMH comparison found LEDs need about 15% less electricity for similar output. A 480W fixture on a 12-hour flower schedule uses 5.76 kWh a day, so the draw on the label sets the bill.

Is a 1,000-watt LED really 1,000 watts?

Not always. Some fixtures are named for an HPS equivalent or a rounded figure, and the real draw is lower. The FloraFlex 900W draws 700W, while the AC Infinity IONFRAME EVO10 lists 1000W. Size the room on the draw in the specifications, never the name.
