Traps are the scouting step of an IPM program in our plant care range. Cards report pest pressure but rarely control a population alone. When counts climb, pair them with a labeled product from pesticides and insecticides.

Types of Sticky Traps

Yellow Sticky Cards

Yellow draws whiteflies, winged aphids, fungus gnat adults, leafminers and shore flies. Common Culture Impact boards measure 10 x 25 cm, and Sensor cards are 3 x 5 in with glue on both sides. Seabright aphid and whitefly traps hang with a wire twist tie. Pick yellow for general scouting in any room.

Blue Thrips and Leafminer Traps

Blue is the stronger signal for thrips. Seabright blue panels open to 4 x 14 in with a printed counting grid. Grower's Edge sells blue thrips traps in 5-packs. Common Culture also makes 10-packs of blue boards. BioWorks cards carry yellow on one side and blue on the other.

Glue Rolls and Pot Stakes

Common Culture yellow and blue rolls run 100 m long for mass trapping along rows. The clear 18 cm roll attracts nothing, so it spares bees and released beneficials. Dual Action stakes carry a writable label on one face and glue on the other, for pots up to 5 gallons.

How Growers Use Sticky Traps

Hang cards with the bottom edge 4 to 6 inches above the canopy, as UConn advises, and raise them as plants grow. Add a card near every door and vent. For fungus gnats, lay a card flat at the media surface. Count weekly, since catches pile up.

How many sticky traps do I need?

UConn recommends at least 3 to 4 cards per 1,000 sq ft, with one card as the bare minimum. Add one near each door and vent. Mass trapping takes far more surface, which is why larger rooms run Common Culture rolls along the rows.

How often should you change sticky traps?

Weekly is the standard. UConn suggests checking cards every week, twice a week in hot weather, and replacing them at the same visit. Swap sooner once a card is crowded. After releasing winged beneficials, wait a day or two before changing cards so the new arrivals stay free.

Do sticky traps work for thrips?

Yes, for monitoring. Blue attracts thrips more strongly than yellow, which helps you detect low numbers early, according to UConn. Hang Seabright or Grower's Edge blue traps at canopy height and near vents. Cards alone rarely control thrips, so pair the counts with leaf checks and a labeled treatment.

Do yellow sticky traps attract bees?

They can. Bright cards draw some pollinators and released parasitic wasps, and UConn notes bumblebees are drawn to blue cards. Cut back on colored cards where bees work. The Common Culture clear roll attracts nothing and simply intercepts whatever flies through its plane.
