Types of Liquid Feeds

Base Nutrients

A base feed supplies the full diet, usually in two or three parts. Pick it by medium first. House & Garden makes separate Soil and Cocos formulas. Canna Coco A and B runs one rate, 0.5 fl oz per gallon of each part, through the whole cycle. Synthetic lines suit recirculating hydro.

Organic Feeds

Bloom Boosters and Additives

Bloom boosters are high in phosphorus and potassium and work with almost any base line. House & Garden Bud XL, Big Bud, Hydroplex and Heavy 16 Fire are proven picks. Cal-Mag, silica and carbohydrate sweeteners round out a feed program.

How Growers Mix Liquid Fertilizer

Add each part to the water separately, never concentrate to concentrate. Shake each bottle first and store it away from heat and frost, since salts can settle or crystallize. Start young plants at about a quarter of label strength and build up. Check pH after mixing: 5.5 to 6.5 for hydro, 6.2 to 7.2 for soil.

When to use bloom booster?

Only in flower, and timing depends on the product. Canna PK 13/14 runs for about one week near the middle of flower at 15 mL per 10 L. Heavy 16 Fire starts in the last week or two of veg and ramps through bloom. Bud XL goes in from mid bloom at 1 mL per liter.

What is the best bloom booster?

The one that fits your base line and feed schedule. Bud XL, Big Bud, Hydroplex and Heavy 16 Fire all work alongside other brands' base nutrients. Because they carry a lot of phosphorus and potassium, watch for tip burn and stay at or below the label rate.

Is liquid fertilizer better than powder?

Once dissolved, the plant takes up the same elements either way. Liquids pour and measure by the milliliter, which suits small reservoirs, dosers and multi-part lines. Powders suit large rooms that mix big batches. Compare cost per gallon of mixed solution rather than bottle price when deciding.
