Odor Control Systems

Odor control systems scrub exhaust air through activated carbon and neutralize what lingers, keeping a grow room discreet. Tents run a carbon filter on the exhaust fan, rooms add an intake filter, and facilities layer chlorine dioxide or gel near doorways.

Odor Control for Grow Rooms: Carbon Filters, Air Boxes and Neutralizers

Odor control starts at the exhaust, where a carbon filter scrubs air before it leaves the room. Neutralizer gels and chlorine dioxide treat what is left in the space. This collection covers both, from 4 inch tent filters to 3,500 CFM Air Box units, plus intake filters that keep dust out....

For filters by size, see our carbon filters. Purifiers and sanitizers live under clean air solutions, and both sit in the wider air, water and CO2 range.

Types of Odor Control Systems

Carbon Filters and Pre-Filters

Kootenay, Can-Lite, Phat, AC Infinity, Common Culture and Active Air filters pass air through a bed of activated carbon. Phat packs RC 412 virgin carbon loose rather than pelletized. Kootenay runs CKV-4 pellets. Washable pre-filters catch dust so the carbon lasts longer.

Air Boxes and Intake Filters

Air Box units are flat carbon boxes, from the 250 CFM Junior to the 3,500 CFM Air Box 4+. The Junior works pushing or pulling. Intake boxes from AC Infinity, Ruck and Air Box Jr HEPA keep dust and fine particles out of the fresh air.

Neutralizers and Chlorine Dioxide

Ona Gel blends 32 essential oils and neutralizes odor by evaporation. Fortify Sky pouches release chlorine dioxide over up to 4,000 cubic feet for 30 days. ProKure G treats about 1,000 cubic feet per 10 g, but its label bars use on plants or crops.

How Growers Build an Odor Control Setup

Match the filter to the exhaust fan, add a filtered intake, and keep the room under slight negative pressure. Seal tent zippers and duct ports, since odor leaks there first. Neutralizers then treat curing rooms and other spaces without an exhaust filter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do carbon filters remove odor?

Yes. Activated carbon binds odor-causing molecules as air passes through the bed, so smell is removed rather than masked. Common Culture describes the carbon acting as a scrubber. Results depend on enough contact time, which is why filter size and fan speed have to match.

How long do carbon filters last in a grow tent?

Common Culture estimates about 2 years for its machine-packed filters. Life drops with heavy dust and high humidity, so wash or swap the pre-filter often. AC Infinity ships two washable pre-filters with its duct filter, and its flanges reverse to extend use.

What size carbon filter do I need?

Match the filter's exhaust rating to the fan, not its scrubbing rating. Phat notes that a 1,400 CFM scrubbing filter handles about 700 CFM inline on an exhaust fan. Kootenay lists its SL 1000 at 840 CFM exhaust and 1,680 CFM recirculating.
