Gavita Pro 1700e LED vs Luxx 645 LED Pro - Grow Room LED Comparison

Gavita Pro 1700e LED vs Luxx 645 LED Pro - Grow Room LED Comparison

As part of an extensive project to test all of the LED lights we sell, we are comparing the Gavita Pro 1700e LED and Luxx 645 LED lights. These companies are two LED grow light juggernauts who are looking to change the way high value crops are grown. Many states have limited the amount of power that growing operations can use just as LED technology has become more efficient and less expensive. This has led to LED grow lights quickly becoming the choice for maximizing yields.

Gavita released its Pro 1700e LED light and took the industry by storm with its fixture being the most efficient that we tested at Light Laboratory, coming in at a whopping 2.76 umol/J at 380-780 nanometers. Luxx very shortly after released its 645 LED light to go head-to-head with the best LED grow lights out there. So how do they stack up? Let's look at this comparison that you might as well call the Ferrari vs Lamborghini of grow lighting.

A Few of Our Favorite Product ReviewsUser Reviews of Gavita Pro 1700e LED

  • "We're a licensed facility and changed out one of our flower rooms from 24 of the gavita 1000w DE's to 24 of these lights. … The first harvest wasn't that great, but that's because we overfed our plants! Watch out when you switch. We overwatered. When you don't have as much heat, the plants don't drink as much… We're a licensed facility and charged electricity is down 30%, our HVAC is probably down another 20%, and our yield is 5% higher. We dropped the LEDs within 18 inches of the plants. They love it." - Carl on 2/28/20

  • "This thing beams!! My plants are lovin it. If you throw it in a tent, make sure you have a 5' x 5' or larger. This thing is pretty big, but it fills the whole tent with uniform light, which is what I was going for. Super happy w/ this purchase." - Norman G. on 9/12/20

  • "I finished my 1st grow with the lights about 2 months ago and got 3 lbs. and 5 oz per light in each 4 x 4 sq. ft area. They worked like a dream right out of the box and the grow went about perfectly. Now in my 2nd grow and 3 weeks away from finishing." - thcfamer on 12/16/20

User Reviews of Luxx 645 Pro LED

  • "Love them! if I go with one brand I will be sticking with Luxx. I was worried about the 6 bars compared to the 8 on most but the par readings were actually really good throughout the canopy." - Yellow Penguins on 6/17/20

Comparing Expected Yields

Both the Gavita and the Luxx LED put out some seriously impressive efficiency and total output numbers—so much that growers often claim they are getting 3 lbs (1,362 grams) per fixture when all environmental conditions are well managed. That's an astounding 2.1 grams per watt.

Grams per watt is one of the most direct ways of calculating how well a grow light produces healthy yields and harvests. For context, if you got 1 gram per watt with your 1,000w HPS fixture 3 years ago, you'd have been lauded as a grower that seriously knows how to optimize plant growth. Now we're getting over 2 grams per watt! Both of these lights will bring about some serious yield increases when swapping out old HPS, MH, CMH, and even older LED lighting technology.

Spectrum Differences

The spectrum of the Gavita and Luxx LED lights is shown below and follows the curve of most full-spectrum LEDs, with increased intensity in the blues, oranges and reds. Although the color intensities are very strong in the unique colors as shown (especially in the Luxx graph), both lights will look white to the human eye, with little sprinkles of red diodes. These LEDs do not come off looking red and blue as old LEDs did.

The spectrum of these two LEDs is so similar as to make a negligible difference to the end user. We consider them both to be equally matched in spectrum design, using the latest knowledge for maximizing yield through spectral design.

Take a look at the PAR grid charts below. The Gavita data comes directly from our own testing and we have included factory data from Luxx for the comparison. Their grid is slightly different at 12" above the grid and a 4' x 4' area, so we're not comparing apples to apples in these grids.
