5 Gallon Black Bucket for Reservoirs and Large Plants

This is a black plastic 5 gallon bucket with a carry handle, the standard size for buckets in the grow room. It holds enough solution for a single-plant deep water culture setup or a small top-up reservoir. Growers also use it to mix a full batch of nutrients, haul media, or grow a large plant in soil or coco. The black wall blocks light, which helps keep algae out of stored water and nutrient solution. Filled with water, it weighs roughly 42 lb, so the handle earns its place. The 3 gallon bucket from the same line nests inside it, forming a simple two-bucket hydroponic setup. Plastic will not rust, and it rinses clean between runs. Several lined up on a shelf make a quick mixing and storage station. Hawthorne Gardening Company supplies it for hydroponic and indoor garden use. It is the bucket most DIY hydro builds are drawn around.

Building With a Bucket With Handle

A bucket with handle makes a quick deep water culture vessel. Cut a net pot hole in a fitted lid, drop an airstone to the bottom and fill to just below the net pot. Run the air pump around the clock, since roots in DWC depend on that dissolved oxygen. For a two-bucket drain-to-waste setup, leave this outer bucket undrilled and seat a drilled 3 gallon bucket inside it. The outer bucket catches runoff, which you can check for EC and pH before emptying. As a grow container, drill five or six 1/2 in drainage holes around the base and add coarse media at the bottom. When mixing nutrients, fill with water first, add each part in sequence and stir between additions. Mark a fill line on the inside so every batch starts at the same volume. Keep buckets off a cold floor in winter and watch solution temperature in hot rooms. Rinse and sanitize between runs so algae and pathogens don't carry into the next batch.
