This is the 3 by 6 foot size in the FS range of greenhouse rolling benches, formed from 12 gauge steel. An anti-rotate stop plate keeps the top square when it is cantilevered out past its base. The top slides sideways, which means one aisle serves a whole run of benches rather than an aisle beside each one. Standard builds are sized to Botanicare Low Tide and OD trays. The tray itself is a separate item, and so is the choice of leg height.

What Greenhouse Rolling Benches Do to a Floor Plan

The case for rolling anything is arithmetic, so here is the arithmetic. Put fixed benches in a room and every bench needs an aisle beside it. Take a 3 ft bench with a 2 ft aisle next to it. That pair occupies 5 ft of floor and only 3 ft of it is growing anything. Across a room, three fifths of the floor is under plants and two fifths is walkway. Now roll the tops instead. One 2 ft aisle serves the entire run, because it moves to wherever someone is working. In a 20 ft span that is six benches at 3 ft each, eighteen feet of bench, with the aisle borrowed from whichever gap is currently open. Ninety percent of the floor is growing rather than sixty. That is about half again as much bench in the same building, which is why rooms get converted. There are two costs to that gain and neither gets mentioned. Only one aisle is open at a time, so two people working opposite ends of a run will be moving benches past each other. And the floor has to be close to level, because a bench that rolls downhill on its own is a nuisance at best. Neither is a reason to stay with fixed benches. Both are worth knowing before the room is laid out.

Leg Height, and Fitting Botanicare Low Tide Trays

Two things about this product are easy to get wrong, and both involve what is not in the box. The first is the top surface. A rolling bench is a stand and a rolling mechanism. It is built to accept a flood table, expanded metal or a wire mesh top. Standard builds are dimensioned around Botanicare Low Tide and OD trays. The tray is sold separately. Anyone pricing a room needs both lines in the budget. The second of them is leg height. FS build the legs in three lengths, nine, fifteen and twenty one inches, each with three inches of adjustment in it. Bench height sets working posture and the distance from canopy to fixture. On the frame itself the steel is 12 gauge, and it is formed rather than left flat. That is what lets a loaded top hang past its base without sagging. The anti-rotate stop plate is the part that keeps it square while cantilevered. Trellis mounts are built into the frame, so they support the tray and take vertical trellis posts without brackets added later. Finish is either a DTM clear coat or an in-house powder coat, and the powder coat carries a one year warranty. FS recommend anchoring the feet to the floor. Custom widths and lengths are built for rooms that do not divide evenly, and those builds can take Staal and Plast trays.

Key Features

  • One aisle for a whole run: On the arithmetic above, about half again as much bench in the same floor.
  • 12 gauge formed steel: Formed for rigidity, so a loaded top holds while cantilevered.
  • Anti-rotate stop plate: Keeps the top square under load when rolled out past its base.
  • Sized to Botanicare trays: Low Tide and OD; standard sizes are 4x8, 4x4, 4x6 and 3x6 ft.
  • The tray is a separate item: The bench accepts a flood table, expanded metal or wire mesh.
  • Legs in 9, 15 and 21 in: Each with 3 in of adjustment.
  • Trellis mounts in the frame: They support the tray and take vertical posts without added brackets.
  • Powder coat, one year warranty: DTM clear is the alternative finish; FS advise anchoring the feet.
