This Gro Pro 30 gallon fabric pot measures 26 inches across and 16 inches deep. Most of the extra volume over a smaller pot arrives as width rather than depth. Non-woven fabric lets air reach the medium from every side, and the walls drain instead of holding water at the base.

How a 30 Gallon Fabric Pot Uses Its Extra Volume

The step up from the twenty gallon is mostly a step outward. That size is 21 inches across and 15 deep; this one is 26 across and 16. Half the additional capacity is width and almost none of it is depth, which is exactly the right way for a container to grow. Roots working outward into a wide, shallow volume stay closer to the oxygen coming through the wall. A deep narrow pot buries its lowest third where air never arrives. Fabric is non-woven and the entire surface breathes. Water drains through rather than pooling in the base. The empty pot weighs three quarters of a pound. Filled, though, this is a two-person lift once the medium is wet, and that is worth planning for before it is sited.

Keeping a Large Root Zone Evenly Watered

Volume introduces a problem smaller containers do not have: getting water to the edges. A single dripper in the centre of a pot this wide feeds a column down the middle and leaves the outer ring dry. That wastes most of the capacity you paid for. Either run multiple emitters spaced around the circumference or hand water in a spiral rather than a spot. The fabric makes this more forgiving than plastic would, because the medium wicks laterally rather than channelling straight down. Faster dry-back is the counterweight to all of this. Evaporation happens across the whole wall, so a warm room pulls moisture from the outer inch faster than the core. That outer inch is where the air-pruned feeder roots live. Watch the edges rather than the middle when judging when to water. Sitting these on a bench or saucers rather than directly in a runoff tray stops them wicking the runoff back up.
