Grower's Edge Deluxe Steel Stake, 7/16 in by 5 ft

This bag holds 20 heavy-duty steel plant stakes, each 5 ft long and 7/16 in in diameter. A solid steel core gives every stake the stiffness to hold up heavy, top-loaded plants. The core is sealed in a green plastic coating, which keeps out moisture and makes the stakes weather and rust proof. Small spurs run along the surface, so tie string, tape or clips grip the stake instead of sliding down. That keeps a branch held at the height you tied it, even as the plant gains weight. Steel stakes will not split, rot or break down the way wood and cane can over a season. They work indoors in pots and beds, and outdoors in garden rows. At this thickness they suit tall vegetables, vining crops and flowering plants with heavy tops. The green finish blends into the canopy, so the stakes stay out of sight once plants fill in. Wiped clean between crops, a set of stakes can serve for many seasons.

Setting a Plant Support Stake Where It Counts

A plant support stake works best when it goes in early, before roots fill the pot. Push it in a few inches from the main stem so it misses the root ball's core. In containers, sink it to the bottom of the pot for the firmest hold. In open ground, drive it at least a foot deep, deeper in loose or sandy soil. Tie stems loosely in a figure eight, with the cross between stem and stake. That leaves room for the stem to thicken without the tie cutting in. Let the spurs do the work of holding each tie at its height. Add ties every foot or so as the plant climbs, and loosen any that start to pinch. For top-heavy flowers late in the cycle, tie the heaviest branches to their own stake. Pull the stakes after harvest, rinse off soil and residue, and store them bundled and dry.
