This deep water culture kit grows four plants, each suspended over its own 5 gallon reservoir. Every bucket has a watertight seal and an 8 in basket that holds the growing medium above the solution. Each basket takes about 3.8 L of clay pebbles, rockwool mini cubes or coco chips. One multi-outlet air pump feeds all four buckets at once. A multi-purpose hose carries air from the pump straight to the bottom of each bucket. That raw-air design leaves no air stone in the tank to clog with salts or biofilm. Fittings include a 1/2 in grommet, a 1/2 in elbow and 1/4 in black tubing. Because the buckets are not linked, each site can carry its own nutrient strength and pH. A root problem in one bucket also stays in that bucket instead of spreading through a shared system. The whole kit ships at about 15 lb, and growing media is sold separately.
Running a 5 Gallon Bucket Hydroponic System
A 5 gallon bucket hydroponic system suits a 4 x 4 ft tent or a corner of a room where four large plants have space to spread. Space the buckets 18 to 24 in apart, centre to centre, so canopies do not crowd each other. Set the air pump at or above bucket level so water cannot siphon back into it if the power drops. Fill each bucket with mixed nutrient solution and confirm every site is bubbling before planting. Rinse clay pebbles well, then set rooted cuttings in the baskets with the root tips just touching the solution. As roots reach down, lower the water level slightly to leave an air gap under the basket. Hold solution temperature between 65 and 72 °F to protect roots and limit algae. Keep the lids closed and light-tight, and top up with plain water between full changes. Change each bucket on a regular schedule, checking pH and EC daily. Keep a spare air pump on hand, since roots in still water start to suffer within hours.
