What the TrolMaster Delta-1 Drives

This is the drive itself rather than the control station. The distinction matters when you specify parts, because the two are sold separately and neither works alone. The Delta-1 is a compact variable speed unit rated at 5 horsepower, or 3.7 kilowatts. It takes three phase power at 380 to 480 volts, 50 or 60 hertz, drawing 11.6 amps on normal duty and 9.9 amps on heavy duty. Output is three phase at 0 to 460 volts, 10.5 amps normal and 9 amps heavy, across a frequency range of 0 to 599 hertz. That range is what allows fine speed control instead of the crude high and low steps a contactor gives you. It arrives with its parameters already set for the VFD-1 module and an RJ45 cable in the box. The enclosure is IP20 and UL Open-Type, rated for ambient conditions from minus 20 to 50 degrees Celsius. Fitted with a conduit box kit it meets NEMA 1 and UL Type 1, with the ambient range narrowing to 40 degrees Celsius.

Pairing a Variable Frequency Drive With Hydro-X Pro

The Delta-1 does not talk to your controller on its own. It pairs with the VFD-1 station, which connects to a Hydro-X Pro over a standard RJ12 cable and passes speed commands down. That is the whole chain: controller, station, drive, motor. One limitation deserves stating up front rather than in a footnote. A drive of this type runs three phase motors only. A single phase fan cannot be driven by it, nor controlled through the VFD-1. Check the motor plate before you specify anything. Beyond that, the gains are the usual ones for speed control on ventilation. A fan held at the speed the room needs draws less power than one cycling on and off. The mechanical shock of repeated starting disappears along with it. Mount the drive in a clean dry electrical area rather than in the airstream, and leave clearance for the heat it sheds under load.
