Types of Stakes and Markers

Coated Steel Stakes

AC Infinity garden stakes use hollow steel wrapped in a UV-resistant plastic coating, 0.43 inches thick, in 2, 3, 4 and 5 ft lengths. Ridges give ties grip, and slots in the end take netting. Pick them for heavy fruiting plants, A-frames and ScrOG frames over fabric pots.

Bamboo Stakes

GROW!T natural bamboo comes untreated in 25-packs of 3, 4 and 6 ft canes. Bamboo is light and easy to replace, so it suits seasonal crops and single stems that need a quick tie. The Trellis Slayer 9000 holds and moves up to four rolls of netting.

Set stakes early, before roots fill the pot, so you don't spear them later. Tie stems loosely in a figure eight to leave room to thicken. Label every cutting and seedling the day it is made, and use one color per strain or batch.

How to stake plants in pots?

Push the stake in near the edge of the pot, then tie the main stem to it loosely as it grows. In fabric pots, AC Infinity stakes can anchor through the corner loops. For a whole tent, set stakes at the corners and run trellis netting between them.

How tall should plant stakes be?

Match the stake to the plant's final height plus the part that goes into the ground. Penn State Extension suggests 6 to 7 ft stakes for indeterminate tomatoes and 4 ft for determinate types, driven 1 ft deep. In pots, a 3 or 4 ft stake covers most indoor plants.

Do tomatoes need stakes?
