Growers Choice ROI-E720 vs Fluence SPYDR 2p LED Comparison

Our comparison of the Growers Choice ROI-E720 and Fluence SPYDR 2p lights comes just as many states are limiting the amount of power that growing operations may use. The limits have resulted in LED grow lights quickly becoming the choice for maximizing yields. Both companies are LED grow light juggernauts that are looking to change the way high-value crops are grown, with LED technology becoming more efficient and less expensive. This comparison is part of an extensive GrowersHouse project to test all the LED lights we sell.

Both the Growers Choice ROI-E720 and Fluence SPYDR 2p LED lights are among the top models in the industry for maximizing PAR efficiency, with the ROI-E720 coming in at 2.37 umols/J and the SPYDR 2P at 2.46 umols/J (b/t 400-700nm). Discussion: There are several specs, in addition to PAR intensity and spectrum, that vary significantly between these two LED brands and can affect a buyer’s decision.

The Growers Choice LED produces a considerably higher PAR intensity of 1895.5 umols/sec over the Fluence LED of 1550 umols/sec, enabling the Growers Choice LED to cover a larger grow area: 6’ x 6’ instead of only 5’ x 5’. The Fluence LED, on the other hand, produces a slightly better PAR efficiency of 2.46 umols/J while the Growers Choice PAR efficiency is 2.37 umols/J, which makes the Fluence 3.66% more efficient overall.

Growers Choice manufactures a controller that can be used to program DLI, dimmability and fail safe responses of up to 200 lights together. Fluence offers a controller only for dimming 50 lights.

Fluence produces an LED model that accepts higher voltage inputs (347–480v); the Growers Choice brand does not. The SPYDR 2p LED also is considerably lighter, weighing just 45% as much as the Growers Choice fixture. The SPYDR also incorporates better waterproofing, with a rating of IP66, vs. the Growers Choice rating of IP65. IP66-rated products can withstand the penetrative power of high-pressure water jets, whereas IP65-products can prevent only low-pressure water sources from entering the protective housing. This makes the Fluence SPYDR 2p LED far easier to clean.

Comparing Expected Yields

Both the Growers Choice and Fluence LEDs are impressively efficient with total yields surpassing 2 grams produced per LED watt expended.

Grams per watt is one of the most direct methods of calculating the ability of a grow light to produce healthy yields. Most HID fixtures cultivate around 1 gram per watt, while these highly efficient LED fixtures are capable of more than double the yield per watt.

The use of either LED will result in serious yield increases, especially when replacing HPS, MH, and CMH fixture(s).

Spectrum Differences

The spectrums produced, between 380-780nm, by the Growers Choice and Fluence LED lights are shown below and are similar to the curves of most modern full-spectrum LEDs.

Discussion: The Growers Choice LED offers increased intensity in the blue spectrum while the Fluence LED offers increased intensity in the red–orange spectrums. Despite these differences, we consider both LEDs equally matched in spectral quality, since each utilizes the latest in LED technology required for maximizing potential yields.

Neither LED produces UV or IR radiation, so crop quality can be further improved by incorporating supplemental lighting to these spectrums. Both LEDs will look white to the human eye, with little sprinkles of red diodes. These LEDs do not come off looking red and blue as old LEDs did.

Discussion: The Growers Choice ROI-E720 LED light is a more ideal selection when it comes to cost, since the fixture is 22.3% cheaper to buy and capable of a PAR intensity 18.2% greater than the Fluence model. While the Fluence LED has a lower running cost, it’s at the expense of a lower PAR intensity and therefore provides no real benefit over the ROI-E720.
