What Separates the Myron L Ultrapen From a Pocket Tester

Two specifications, and both are unusual at pen scale. Accuracy is 0.01 pH after wet calibration, which is ten times tighter than the tenth-of-a-pH pens most rooms run. Calibration takes one, two or three points, against pH 4, 7 and 10. Three points is what earns that accuracy across the full range rather than only near the buffer used.

Living With the Ultrapen PT2 Day to Day

Build first. The body is anodized aircraft aluminium with fully encapsulated, shock-resistant electronics, sealed to IP67 and NEMA 6. That is a submersion rating rather than a splash rating. It is why an ultrapen pt2 survives a reservoir room that kills plastic pens. It reads 0.00 to 14.00 pH and 0 to 71C, with temperature compensation automatic to 25C. Readings settle in 10 to 30 seconds. Operation is a single button: press, dip, read. Power is one N-type alkaline cell, drawing 37 mA active and 2 microamps asleep. It weighs 54 g and measures 6.75 in long. One thing to plan for, because it is the real running cost. The pH sensor carries a six month warranty while the pen itself carries twelve. That gap is the manufacturer telling you which part is a consumable.

Key Features

  • 0.01 pH accuracy after wet calibration: Ten times tighter than the 0.1 pH resolution most pocket pens offer.
  • One, two or three point calibration: Against pH 4, 7 and 10. Three points is what holds accuracy across the range.
  • IP67 and NEMA 6 sealed: A submersion rating, not a splash rating, in anodized aircraft aluminium.
  • Automatic temperature compensation: Compensated to 25C, reading 0 to 71C alongside the pH value.
  • One button operation: Press, dip, read. Stable in 10 to 30 seconds on a single N cell.
  • Sensor is the consumable: Six month warranty on the pH sensor against twelve months on the pen.
