What a Combined pH and Moisture Meter Tells You

Two readings from one pair of prongs. Moisture runs 0 dry to 10 moist. pH runs 0 acidic to 10 basic. The needle moves without a battery in it. That matters more than it sounds on a tool that lives in a drawer between uses.

Getting an Honest Reading From an Active Air Probe

Push the prongs into moist medium, not dry. An analogue probe reads through the water in the soil. A dry pot gives a number that means very little, and the same pot watered an hour earlier reads differently. Take two or three spots around the root zone rather than one. The pattern is what tells you something, not a single stab. Then pull it straight back out of the pot. Hydrofarm is blunt about this. Do not leave the probe in soil, and clean the prongs after every use, because corrosion on the contacts is what kills these meters. Treat the pH figure as a direction rather than a laboratory number. One point on the scale is a tenfold change in acidity. This tells you which way to move, and a calibrated pen tells you how far.
