Easy2grow 12 Pot System: Gravity Watering for a Dozen Plants

This AutoPot kit, part number APWS-114, feeds twelve plants from one reservoir without a pump, timer or power cord. Water runs by gravity from a 25-gallon FlexiTank through half-inch supply line to six 2Pot trays. Each tray carries two 2.2-gallon pots and one AQUAvalve5 valve. The valve fills the tray to a shallow depth, roughly three-quarters of an inch to an inch, then shuts off. Plants drink the standing water down, the substrate starts to dry, and only then does the valve open again. That built-in wet and dry cycle keeps roots from sitting in water around the clock. The kit also includes a click-fit tank filter, an inline tap, cross connectors, root control squares and pot socks. AutoPot lists the assembled footprint at about 26 x 26 x 18 inches and around 40 lbs. The same system runs in coco, peat mixes or clay pebbles.

Setting Up an AutoPot Kit for the First Run

An autopot kit works best when the reservoir sits level with or slightly above the trays. Keep the FlexiTank on the same floor and the gravity feed will do the rest. Hand-water every pot from the top on the first day so the medium is fully saturated. Top watering once connects the substrate to the tray and starts the wicking action. Turn on the inline tap and watch each AQUAvalve fill its tray and close. Use a drainage layer of clay pebbles or perlite in the bottom of each pot, or add AirBases, which AutoPot sells separately. Mix nutrients at a moderate strength, since plants draw continuously rather than in large feeds. Check the tank filter and valves between runs. A small bit of debris can hold a valve open or closed. With the tank full, the system keeps running unattended for days at a time.
