A Roll Top Backpack That Grows When You Need It

Fixed-volume bags are either too big or too small. This one unrolls to suit the load. Folded it stands 25 in tall; unrolled it reaches 39 in. Width and depth stay at 12 in by 5 in either way. That extra fabric at the top is the whole idea behind it. Pack light and roll it down; pack heavy and let it out. The shell is the same heavy-duty water repellent fabric as the rest of the AWOL range. Activated carbon lines the inside, protected by a thick nylon mesh. A wetsuit zipper and double flap close it, with powder-coated black hardware throughout. Reinforced stitching and thickened straps carry the load when it is full.

The roll top is a seal as well as a size adjustment. Roll it down at least three turns and the closure tightens against itself. Left loose, it is a gap, and a gap is a leak. The carbon liner behind the mesh does the rest of the work. Adsorption capacity is finite, so air the bag out between uses. Keep it dry, because wet carbon stops holding aroma. A second set of handles means two people can share a heavy load. It carries by hand, on one shoulder, or worn properly on the back. Rolled down, it stores in about two thirds the space.
