What the 70/30 Butane Propane Mix Actually Contains
Seventy percent n-butane, thirty percent propane, guaranteed to 99.5% and sourced in the USA. The ratio is the product. Propane carries a much higher vapour pressure than butane. Adding thirty percent lifts the pressure of the whole mix above straight n-butane, while butane stays the volume component.
Choosing an N-Butane Propane Blend Over Straight Butane
Pressure is the practical difference and it cuts both ways. A blend at this ratio moves more readily at a given temperature than pure n-butane, which is useful when ambient conditions are working against you. It also means the vessel and every fitting downstream see higher pressure. An n-butane propane blend is not a drop-in swap for a pure butane system without checking equipment ratings first. Purity is guaranteed at 99.5%, and the material arrives clean, colorless and odorless. There is no mercaptan in it. Consumer fuel gas carries that additive so a leak is obvious to anyone nearby, and its absence here shifts that job onto detection equipment. The tank is DOT refillable LP with a dip tube, drawing liquid rather than vapour. BVV recommends distilling any solvent before use, which is worth doing regardless of what the certificate says.
Key Features
- 70% n-butane, 30% propane: A supplier-blended ratio, guaranteed to 99.5% and sourced in the USA.
- Higher vapour pressure than pure butane: The propane fraction lifts working pressure, which helps in cool ambient conditions.
- Dip tube for liquid withdrawal: Draws liquid from the bottom of the tank rather than vapour off the top.
- No mercaptan odorant: Clean, colorless and odorless, so leak detection cannot rely on smell.
- 120 lb DOT refillable LP tank: Bulk format. Confirm downstream equipment is rated for the higher pressure.

Handling and Regulatory Notes
- Use only in a well-ventilated area, and only for purposes permitted under your local laws and ordinances.
- BVV advises distillation of every solvent before use.
- California restricts retail supply of butane above 150 mL. Permitted channels are listed under CA Bus & Prof Code Division 10 and CA Health & Safety Code 11362.775.
