What the Can-Filter 12 Inch Flange Does on the Filter

This is the outflow flange that caps the clean-air end of a Can-Filter and turns it into a ducted fitting. The collar has a 12 in opening sized for standard 12 in duct and inline fans. Its spun steel plate measures 14.75 in across, with a 2.5 in collar for the duct to slide over. A foam rubber gasket sits between the plate and the filter cap. Six hex-drive self-tapping screws pull the plate down onto that gasket and hold it there. Once seated, the joint stops air from slipping around the carbon bed instead of through it. That leak path is the usual reason a scrubbed room still smells at the door. The flange is listed for the Can-Filter 125 and 150 series, which share this outlet size. It weighs about 1.71 lb, so it adds almost nothing to a hung filter. Steel holds its shape when a heavy fan or a stiff run of duct leans on the collar.

Fitting a Carbon Filter Flange in the Exhaust Line

A carbon filter flange earns its keep on the side of the filter that faces the fan. Most growers hang the filter high in the room and pull air through it, with the flange pointing at the inline fan. Lay the gasket on a clean, dry filter cap before the plate goes on. Drive the screws in a cross pattern so the plate draws down evenly rather than tilting. Slide the duct or the fan collar over the flange, then lock it with a clamp or a wrap of foil tape. The kit is the plate, the gasket and the screws, so plan on that clamp as a separate piece. A run that steps down to a smaller fan also needs its own reducer, since this collar only takes full-size duct. When the carbon finally loads up, the flange comes off and moves to the replacement filter. Check the gasket at that swap, because a flattened seal lets odour slip past the bed. Keep the joint tight, and the fan pulls every cubic foot through the carbon.
