Inside the Can-Lite Carbon Filter 8 x 40

This 8 in filter stands 40 in tall on a 12 in outside diameter, with a built-in 8 in flange. Can-Filters rates it for a recommended maximum of 1000 CFM. Inside sits a 2 in packed bed holding about 31.6 lb of 100% Australian granulated activated carbon. The carbon adsorbs odour-carrying volatile compounds, holding them on its surface as air passes through. The perforated shell is 51% open, so air reaches the bed without much restriction. Tops and bottoms are aluminium, which keeps the whole filter near 42 lb. A pre-filter sleeve comes fitted to stop dust and pollen loading the carbon. It handles operating temperatures up to 80 °C, although the fan attached to it may not. Each unit is made in a dedicated carbon filter plant in North America. The bed is factory packed to stop air channelling, so refilling is not recommended.

Sizing and Hanging a Canlite Filter on 8 in Duct

A canlite filter of this size is a common choice for a flower room running several lights on one exhaust line. For exhaust, divide the room volume in cubic feet by three to find the minimum CFM for a three-minute air exchange. A 10 x 12 x 8 ft room works out to about 320 CFM, which sits well inside this filter's rating. For a recirculating scrubber, divide the volume by 1.5 instead. Keep the fan at or below the filter's rating, because faster air spends less time in contact with the carbon. The filter works in push or pull, and pulling air through it keeps the fan motor clean. Hang it from the ceiling or mount it horizontally, with supports that can carry its weight. Expect a pressure drop of roughly 0.7 in water gauge at full rated airflow, and size the fan with that in mind. Avoid long stretches at or above 70% humidity, since damp air shortens carbon life. Change the pre-filter once it looks dirty, because a clogged sleeve cuts airflow. When odour slips through at normal fan speed, the carbon is spent and the filter should be replaced.
