This MegaGarden cap is the small porthole cover that closes the access hole into the system reservoir. Its job is to let you check or top up the tank without lifting out the planters and the insert grow tray. It measures about 4 by 4.1 by 0.4 inches and weighs almost nothing. Distributors list it under both the Hydrofarm and Active Aqua labels.

What the MegaGarden Cap Actually Covers

The MegaGarden is an ebb and flow system with a reservoir underneath and a grow tray sitting on top. Getting to the tank normally means lifting the pots and the insert tray out, which nobody wants to do twice a day. The porthole solves that, and this is the lid for it. Pull the cap, read the level, take a conductivity reading, top up, put the cap back. It measures roughly 4 in across and 0.4 in deep, and weighs about a hundredth of a pound. One distributor lists the colour as red while others do not state it, and Hydrofarm publish no material specification. Both of those are reported here rather than filled in with a guess. It arrives as a single piece with nothing to assemble. The part number is MGCAP and it appears under the Hydrofarm and Active Aqua labels, which are related brands. Leaving that port open is exactly what the cap exists to prevent.

Why Leaving the Reservoir Access Open Costs You

An open reservoir access port is three problems at once, and none of them announce themselves. Light falling into nutrient solution grows algae, and algae in a tank ends up in a pump and then in the roots. Open water evaporates, and as it goes the remaining solution concentrates, so conductivity climbs without anyone adding feed. And an open hole lets in leaf litter, perlite, fungus gnats and whatever else is on the floor of the room. A missing cap therefore shows up as a drifting reading and a green tank rather than as an obvious fault. Keeping a spare in the drawer is sensible for exactly that reason, because these are easy to knock off a bench and lose. Wipe the rim before seating it, since grit on the lip is what stops a cover sitting flat. Treat the porthole as the routine inspection point and the rest of the system stays undisturbed. Anyone whose system came without one, or who inherited a used unit, needs this before running nutrient. It is the least expensive part on the whole system and the one most often absent.
