What Buffered Means on a Char Coir Coco Cube
Buffering is the single most important word on a coco cube and almost nobody explains it. Coco holds a large number of exchange sites. Untreated material arrives with those sites loaded with potassium and sodium, from the coconut itself and from seawater processing. Put a feed into it and the coir swaps its potassium and sodium for your calcium and magnesium. The plant then shows a deficiency while the analysis on the bottle says otherwise. Buffered coir has already had those sites loaded with calcium and magnesium at the factory, so the exchange has happened before you feed anything. That is why the same nutrient recipe behaves differently in washed coir and in buffered coir. Washing is a separate step and the number that proves it is here too, with conductivity held below 0.6. The material is stabilised between pH 6.0 and 6.5 and certified free of pathogens.
RHP Certification, Cation Exchange and the Fabric Bag
RHP is the Dutch substrate standard and it is worth understanding rather than reading as a badge. It covers batch consistency, contaminant limits and the traceability behind both, which is what stops one pallet behaving differently from the next. On a crop run to a schedule that repeatability matters more than any single headline number. Char Coir hold the certification on this material. The cation exchange capacity that made buffering necessary is also why coco forgives more than an inert medium does. Those loaded sites act as a small reserve around the root. The bag is the other decision here. An aerated fabric wall lets air into the sides of the block and lets water leave them. The material dries faster and more evenly than a plastic wrapped cube. Plan for more frequent irrigation rather than less. Expanded volume is 2.25 L at 6 x 6 x 4 in, and a case holds thirty-two.
Key Features
- Volume: Two and a quarter litres, expanding to six by six by four inches
- Equivalent to: A stone wool block of the same outside dimensions
- Certification: RHP certified, the Dutch substrate consistency standard
- Buffered: Exchange sites pre-loaded with calcium and magnesium at the factory
- Why that matters: Unbuffered coir swaps its potassium for your calcium and magnesium
- Conductivity: Held below nought point six, which proves the washing
- pH: Stabilised between six point nought and six point five
- Pathogens: Certified free of them
- Fabric bag: Aerated walls, so the block dries faster and more evenly
- Case: Thirty-two cubes to a case, as supplied
