The Chikamasa B-500SL bends its uncoated Japanese stainless blade into an L-shape, so the tip reaches up and over a canopy without cocking the wrist. These slanted blade garden scissors suit close detail trimming, grape thinning overhead and tucked leaves on dense flowers.

Chikamasa B-500SL and Its L-Shaped Stainless Blade

Look at this pair from the side and the difference jumps out. The blade kinks away from the handles in what Chikamasa calls an L-shape. Chikamasa designed that angle for work at head height and above, where a straight pair forces the wrist to bend back. The blade is heat-treated Japanese stainless, left uncoated and ground to a fine point. Cutting length is 35 mm on a 155 mm body, and the pair weighs about 42 g. As on every B-500 model, the outer faces are rounded so the blade back does not bruise fruit or finished flower. The grip is orange elastomer resin over an internal steel core, soft on the fingers and rigid under load. A tightened stainless rivet keeps tension at the pivot and resists rust in wet, humid work. A cushioned stop absorbs the shock of each close and cuts down the click. It is the plain, uncoated version of the slanted design.

Slanted Blade Garden Scissors for Detail Work and Overhead Cuts

Growers pick the slant for two jobs. The first is overhead work, like thinning grape clusters on a pergola or trimming the top of a tall plant still on the trellis. The second is detail trimming at the table, where the off-axis tip slips under a sugar leaf or into a crevice without twisting your hand. For fast bulk leaf stripping, a straight blade covers more ground per cut. Because the blade is bare stainless, resin sticks to it sooner than to a fluorine-coated pair. Wipe it with isopropyl every few buds on a sticky trim, or step up to the coated B-500SLF. The upside of no coating is simple care, with nothing to scuff off and nothing to baby. There is no spring either, so your fingers handle the opening stroke. That suits trimmers who value a direct, controlled feel over an assisted one. Keep it on leaf and small stems, since thick or woody growth will chip the fine tip.

Key Features

  • L-Shape Slanted Blade: The angled blade reaches overhead and into tight crevices without forcing the wrist back.
  • Uncoated Japanese Stainless: Heat-treated stainless takes a fine edge and needs nothing more than a wipe and a dry after use.
  • Rounded Outer Faces: The blade backs are ground round so they pass fruit and finished flower without bruising.
  • Steel-Core Elastomer Grip: Soft orange elastomer over a steel core keeps the pair comfortable and rigid through long sessions.
  • Cushioned Stop and Stainless Rivet: A soft stop softens each close, and a stainless rivet holds tension without rusting.
