The Chikamasa B-500S is the plain stainless, straight-blade base model of the B-500 family, light in the hand and razor-sharp out of the pack. These straight blade garden scissors cover bulk trim, stem cutting and grape thinning, and they shrug off humidity without a coating to baby.

Chikamasa B-500S, the Straight Stainless Original

Every other B-500 variant starts from this one. Chikamasa built the line as grape-care scissors in Japan, where growers thin clusters berry by berry and cannot afford to nick the fruit. That job explains the details that make it good for flower work too. The 35 mm straight blade is heat-treated Japanese stainless, ground to a fine point and finished razor-sharp. Its outer faces are rounded, so the back of the blade slides past a berry or a finished bud without bruising it. The whole pair runs 155 mm and weighs just 42 g, so it disappears into the hand after a few minutes. Elastomer grips sit over a steel core, soft on the skin and stiff where the force goes. A tightened stainless rivet keeps the blades aligned without rusting. A cushioned stop takes the shock and the click out of each close. Nothing here is coated or spring-loaded, which is exactly why many trimmers keep a pair in every kit.

Straight Blade Garden Scissors for Bulk Work and Beyond

A straight edge is the workhorse shape. It strips fan leaves from wet branches quickly, cuts stems to hanging length, and squares off the base of each bud cleanly. Growers also use it to thin grape clusters, harvest herbs and take softwood cuttings on the propagation bench. Stainless means a humid dry room is far less likely to spot the blade, even if it goes back in the bin a little damp. The trade-off here is resin. Bare steel collects sticky build-up faster than a fluorine-coated blade, so keep isopropyl and a rag on the table. If a wet trim is on the schedule, the coated B-500SF version makes those wipe-downs less frequent. The straight tip also reaches less easily into tight crevices than the slanted or curved patterns. There is no spring, so your fingers handle the opening, and some trimmers value that extra control on detail cuts. Keep it off woody branches, which will roll or chip a fine edge long before resin ever does.

Key Features

  • Straight Japanese Stainless Blade: Heat-treated stainless takes a razor-sharp edge that moves fast through leaf stripping and stem cutting.
  • Rounded Outer Faces: The blade backs are ground round, a grape-care design that also protects finished flower from bruising.
  • Lightweight Build: At 42 g the pair sits lightly in the hand, which helps across long trim sessions.
  • Steel-Core Elastomer Grip: Soft orange grips over a steel core stay comfortable while keeping the frame rigid.
  • Cushioned Stop and Stainless Rivet: A soft stop absorbs closing shock, and a stainless rivet holds tension without rusting.
