Down To Earth Blood Meal for Nitrogen-Hungry Crops

Leafy, fast-growing crops pull nitrogen from the soil quickly, and pale lower leaves are often the first sign they need more. This box delivers it from a single natural source: dried blood. The guaranteed analysis is 12-0-0, with 12% total nitrogen and no phosphate or potash. Of that, 1.0% is water soluble and 11.0% is water insoluble. The small soluble fraction gives plants a quick start, and soil microbes release the rest over the following weeks. Because it adds only nitrogen, it pairs well with bone meal, kelp or a balanced organic base where those nutrients are already covered. The material is a dark red to brown powder with a strong earthy, ammonia-like smell. Its pH sits around 6.5 to 7.5, so it does not swing soil acidity much. It suits vegetable gardens, raised beds, flower borders and outdoor containers. Corn, spinach, broccoli, lettuce and other heavy feeders respond best. The box holds 5 lb, roughly 15 cups of product.

Feeding With an Organic Nitrogen Fertilizer

Three cups weigh about a pound, half a cup about 2.5 ounces and a tablespoon about a quarter ounce. To prepare a new garden, spread 2 to 3 pounds per 100 square feet and mix it into the top 3 inches of soil. At that rate, one box covers roughly 170 to 250 square feet of new bed. For new transplants, mix a teaspoon into each planting hole and water in well. Side-dress established plants with 1 to 2 teaspoons once a month through the growing season. In outdoor containers, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons per gallon of soil at planting. For established container plants, work a teaspoon per gallon into the surface monthly. Row crops take 200 to 1,000 pounds per acre, depending on the nitrogen target. Water after every application so the nitrogen moves into the root zone. Wear a dust mask and nitrile gloves, because the powder can irritate skin and airways. Close the box after use and store it away from pets, which are drawn to the smell.
