Down To Earth Granular Humic Acid for Healthier Soil
Soil that holds nutrients well grows better crops, and humic substances are a large part of what makes that possible. This box contains a concentrated source of them, mined from naturally occurring, unaltered oxidized lignite. These deposits formed from the ancient remains of decomposed plant material. It contains 50% humic acids, with the remaining 50% inert material. It is crushed, screened and graded to a particle size of 1 to 3 mm, so it spreads evenly by hand or with a spreader. Humic acids improve soil structure and raise its capacity to hold nutrients for roots. They also help plants take up micronutrients that would otherwise stay locked in the soil. The material is acidic, with a pH of about 3.5 to 4.0. Humic acid is a non-plant food ingredient, so the label carries no N-P-K guarantee. Pair it with a fertilizer program rather than using it in place of one. The product is OMRI Listed and approved for organic production. The box holds 5 lb, about 10 cups.
Applying Humic Acid for Plants and Lawns
Two cups weigh about a pound, a quarter cup about 2 ounces and a tablespoon about half an ounce. For new vegetable gardens and flower beds, mix 1 to 2 pounds per 100 square feet into the top 3 inches in spring or fall. Add a tablespoon to each transplant hole, mix it in and water well. In containers, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons per gallon of soil, or 1 to 2 pounds per cubic yard of mix. Feed established container plants with 1 to 2 teaspoons per gallon worked into the surface every other month. Lawns take 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet in spring and fall, watered in well. Spreading right after aeration can improve results. For new lawns, mix the same rate into the top 3 inches before seeding or laying sod. Row crops take 75 to 150 pounds per acre, before planting, with the seed or after fall harvest. Wear a dust mask when spreading, and store the box away from pets.
