What the AutoPot easy2Propagate Basic Kit Contains

Four parts make up the kit. A garden tray measuring 47 by 21.5 in is the base. A clear lid with four fitted vents sits over it. Two pieces of coco matting, each 23 by 20 by 1.2 in, line the tray floor. A root control sheet of 46 by 20 in lays over the matting, gold face up. The whole kit weighs 26 lb. This is the manual-watering version of the easy2Propagate system. Water goes into the tray and the matting holds it. The root control sheet then wicks that water up to the base of whatever is standing on it. Capillary action is doing the watering, which is why the sheet matters as much as the matting does. It keeps roots from growing down into the matting and keeps the tray clean enough to use again. Pots and seed trays both work on it, provided the base is flat and the media touches the sheet. The tray footprint is a bench length rather than a windowsill one, which is what makes this a production tool. The kit's part number is APWS213.

Setting Up a Coco Matting Propagator

A coco matting propagator wants preparing before anything goes on it. AutoPot asks for the matting to be soaked in pH 4.5 water for twenty-four to forty-eight hours, then rinsed. After that it runs on pH 5.5 water. The root control sheet gets a thirty-minute soak of its own. Skip either step and the mat repels water on the first fill. Lay the matting in, the sheet on top with the gold face up, then set the pots down. Water each cell once from above to start the capillary link between the sheet and the media. Then fill the tray until the matting sits about two thirds submerged. Fit the lid snugly and leave the vents closed at first. The target is 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and at least 80% humidity while roots are forming. Open the vents gradually once seedlings or cuttings have rooted. Opening them early costs humidity, and opening them late invites rot. Rinse the matting and the sheet between runs. Both are reusable, and the one thing that ends their life early is salt left to dry in them.
