What the AutoPot easy2Propagate Lid Covers

This is the lid on its own, sized to sit over the 47 by 21.5 in easy2Propagate garden tray. It is clear, so light reaches the cuttings and seedlings under it, and it weighs 7.0 lb. Four fitted vents are built into the top. Each vent opens and closes on its own, which is what gives the lid its range. All four shut, and the air under the lid holds the warmth and humidity a fresh cutting needs. One or two open, and the lid is letting a rooted plant start breathing room air. All four open, and it is a rain cover with airflow underneath. That adjustability is the whole argument for a lid over a tray rather than a loose sheet of plastic. Keep the vents closed at the start, targeting seventy to eighty degrees Fahrenheit and at least eighty percent humidity while roots form. Then they open gradually once seedlings or cuttings have rooted. A bench-length tray under a single lid is a lot of plants under one climate. It is the size that makes this a production piece rather than a windowsill one. The lid is the cover alone, part number APWS210.

Running a Clear Propagator Lid Through a Rooting Cycle

A clear propagator lid does its real work in the first week and its subtle work in the second. Fresh cuttings have no roots to replace the water their leaves lose, so the air around them has to stay close to saturated. Vents shut, lid on, and leave it alone. Condensation on the inside of the lid is the sign that the humidity is where it should be. Lift the lid once a day for a few seconds to change the air, then set it straight back. The second week is about letting go slowly. Open one vent the day the first roots show, another two days later, and work up to all four over a week. A cutting hardened off that way keeps growing. One moved from a sealed lid to open air in a single afternoon wilts, and some never recover from that wilt. Watch for a vent that is open but surrounded by heavy condensation, because that means the air is not moving through it. Wipe the inside of the lid between cycles with a mild sanitiser and rinse it well. Damping-off fungi live on the film that builds up on the underside of a lid, and a clean lid is the easiest control there is. Store it flat or standing on a long edge, since a lid left leaning against a wall takes a bow that never quite comes out.
