What It Does to Greenhouse Whitefly, and When to Release

This wasp is about the size of a pencil dot and harmless to people and pets. It attacks only the immature greenhouse whitefly scale, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, laying an egg inside it. The larva feeds there, kills the scale and turns it black over 20 to 25 days, then emerges and starts again. Adults live around ten days and lay throughout. Timing decides whether it works. Release at the first sign of whitefly, not once the population is established. If numbers are already high, knock them back with insecticidal soap before you release. Because the cycle runs about thirty days, three releases a week apart give you overlapping generations rather than one wave. Rate is roughly one per square foot, or one to three per plant, whichever is higher. Cards carry at least 100 wasps each, ten cards to a strip. If release has to wait, keep them out of sunlight at 40 to 50 F.
