How the EZ Trim Bud Sorter Grades Flower
The sorter is a run of five stainless grates set in a row along a frame, each one coarser than the last. A 27 gallon tote sits under each. Flower goes on at one end and the operator brushes it along. Anything smaller than the first grate drops through into the first tote. What is left moves on to the next, until the largest flower rides over the final grate into the last bin. The standard set is 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1 1/4 in. Each grate measures 19 by 25 in and lifts out, so the sequence or the sizes can change with the strain. EZ Trim cuts custom grates in 1/8 in steps. There is no motor, no vibrating tray and no tumbler. Gravity and a soft brush do the sorting, which is the reason the trichomes stay where they grew. One operator moves a pound through in under a minute, and the table handles 70 to 90 lb an hour. Grates can be set on both sides of the frame, so two people can work towards the centre and roughly double that. A shelf sits on top when the table is not sorting, turning it into a work surface for the trim room. The frame is 101 in long, 28 in wide and 43 in high, and it weighs 210 lb assembled. In the crate are the five totes, the five grates, the sorter brush and the shelf. End caps, pins, two cross rails, the two stands and the Allen key complete the kit.
Running a Gravity Flower Grading Table in the Trim Room
A gravity flower grading table earns its floor space by taking the smalls and the shake out before quality control ever sees them. Popcorn and shake do not need touching up, and a QC bench that only handles the larger grades moves twice as fast. Sort after drying and after the trimmer, and before the final inspection. Dry flower is firm enough to roll over a grate without bruising. Wet flower is not, and it smears the grates. Brush with the grain of the grate and keep the strokes light. The brush is there to move flower along, and pressing it down forces oversize pieces through the slots and spoils the grade. Set the grates small to large every time, because a coarse grate out of sequence lets the medium grade fall into the small tote. Give it eight and a half feet of clear run plus elbow room on each side if two people are working. Label the totes before the shift starts. Five bins of flower at different sizes look the same from across the room, and a mislabelled tote is a packaging error waiting to happen. Sorted by size is sorted by weight, which is what makes eighths and grams go faster at the packing bench. Clear the grates and the frame of loose material between batches, and knock the brush out over the shake tote. The frame comes apart with the Allen key for a proper clean at the end of a run.
