FoxFarm Bush Doctor SledgeHammer, a Yucca-Based Root Zone Rinse
SledgeHammer is a liquid rinse agent from FoxFarm's Bush Doctor line, made to strip mineral salt deposits out of a growing medium. Heavy feeding leaves salts behind in every container. Over time those deposits raise the root-zone EC, slow water movement and can lock nutrients away from the plant. The active ingredient is saponin extracted from Yucca schidigera, a natural surfactant. Saponins lower the surface tension of water, so it wets dry pockets of media and carries dissolved salts out through the drain holes. The liquid is black, close to odourless and fully soluble, with a mildly acidic pH near 4.8. It is OMRI Listed and registered as a CDFA Organic Input Material, which suits organic programs. FoxFarm rates it for soil, soilless mixes and recirculating hydroponics alike. This bottle holds 1 quart (946 mL). A little goes a long way, so one quart covers many rinses.
Using a Flush Solution Through Veg, Flower and Final Rinse
In soil and containers, mix 2 teaspoons (10 mL) per gallon of fresh, plain water and drench the media thoroughly. Repeat every 3 to 4 weeks through harvest to keep salts from creeping back. At that rate this quart makes about 94 gallons of soil drench. In recirculating hydro, add just 2 drops per gallon with each fresh reservoir alongside the regular nutrients. For a full system flush, use 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) per gallon every two weeks. Run the system for an hour, then dump and refill the reservoir. Mix it into plain water for a rinse, not into a strong feed, or the salts you are moving get replaced right away. Expect cloudy, darker runoff on the first pass through heavily fed pots. Check runoff EC before and after, since that drop is the clearest sign the rinse worked. Store the bottle away from freezing and high heat, as the SDS advises.
Key Features
- Yucca Saponin Surfactant: Natural saponins lower surface tension so water wets and rinses the whole root zone.
- Salt Buildup Removal: Regular rinses clear mineral deposits that raise root-zone EC and lock out nutrients.
- Soil and Hydro Rates: Separate directions cover container drenches, reservoir dosing and full system flushes.
- OMRI Listed: It is OMRI Listed and a registered CDFA Organic Input Material.
- Concentrated Liquid: Two teaspoons per gallon for soil means a quart stretches across many rinses.
- Fully Water Soluble: The liquid mixes completely into plain water for even application.
