Where a Gavita 277 Volt Cordset Actually Gets Used
Two seventy-seven volts is not a wall outlet. It is one leg of a 480Y/277 three-phase wye service, the supply feeding most commercial and industrial buildings in North America. Line to neutral gives 277V, line to line gives 480V. Running fixtures at 277V instead of 240V means less current for the same wattage, so thinner conductors carry more lights per circuit. On a room with dozens of fixtures that changes the whole electrical bill of materials.
Wieland Cordset, Open Wire End, and What That Means for Install
The fixture end is a Wieland connector, the industrial pin-and-sleeve fitting Gavita uses so a light can be disconnected without touching the wiring. It clicks on and locks. The other end has no plug at all. Bare conductors, cut to 10 ft 6 in, meant to land in a junction box, a disconnect or a lighting controller. That is deliberate, because 277V has no standard receptacle in the way 120V does. It also means this is not a self-install part. A wieland cordset with an open end has to be terminated by someone qualified, to code, in a box rated for the location. It goes in as a replacement for a damaged cord, or as a spare while commissioning a room. It also covers the case where a run needs more reach than the cord that shipped with the fixture.
Key Features
- For Gavita Classic 277V fixtures: A direct replacement cordset, sold detached rather than as part of a fixture.
- 10 ft 6 in length: Roughly 3.2 m of cord, enough reach for most overhead runs to a junction box.
- Wieland connector on the fixture end: Industrial pin-and-sleeve fitting that locks on and lets a fixture come down without rewiring.
- Open wire on the supply end: Bare conductors for hardwiring, because 277V has no standard plug and receptacle.
- Suits 480Y/277 commercial service: Line to neutral on a three-phase wye, which is what most commercial buildings run.
- Fewer amps per fixture: Higher voltage draws less current at the same wattage, so more lights fit on a circuit.
