General Hydroponics Ripen is a 0.5-7-6 concentrate for the last one to two weeks of a crop. The guaranteed analysis carries 7% available phosphate, 6% soluble potash and only half a percent nitrogen, all of it ammoniacal. The published rate is 5 ml per gallon, which is one teaspoon. It runs alongside your base feed for a week, then replaces it.

What Is in General Hydroponics Ripen, and What Is Not

The analysis is the argument for the product, so here it is in full. Total nitrogen 0.5%, all of it ammoniacal, available phosphate 7.0% and soluble potash 6.0%. Behind those sit magnesium at 0.25% water soluble and sulfur at 0.30%. There is also 0.75% chlorine, which is worth noticing rather than skipping past. It comes from the potassium chloride in the formula, and anyone running a recirculating system should know it is in there. The derived-from list is ammonium phosphate, magnesium sulfate, monopotassium phosphate, potassium chloride, seaweed as Ascophyllum nodosum, and soft rock phosphate. Two of those deserve a mention. Soft rock phosphate releases phosphorus more slowly than a straight mineral salt does. The seaweed is the only non-mineral input in the bottle. What the analysis lacks is nitrogen, and that absence is the entire design. A plant pushed hard on nitrogen in its final fortnight carries that nitrogen into what you harvest. Media are no obstacle either. Rockwool, coco, peat lite mix, potting mix, in-ground soil and water culture are all listed by the manufacturer.

Running It as a Late Flowering Finisher Without Wrecking the Tank

The schedule has two stages and most listings mention only the first. Two weeks out from the flush, add 5 ml per gallon of water, which is one teaspoon, on top of your normal nutrient solution. In the final week, run it on its own at that same rate and drop the base feed entirely. The second stage is the part that gets missed, and it is where this bottle earns its keep. General Hydroponics are explicit that it should not be run at full strength alongside a standard feed. Reservoir conditions matter as much as the dose here. Hold pH between 5.5 and 6.5, keep the solution under 75 degrees Fahrenheit, keep it aerated, and change it out every seven to ten days. One hard compatibility rule comes straight from the manufacturer. Never combine this with Dry KoolBloom. Both are heavy phosphorus finishers, and running the two together stacks phosphate on phosphate at the worst possible moment in the crop. Store the bottle sealed, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.

Key Features

  • A 0.5-7-6 analysis: Seven percent phosphate, six potash and almost no nitrogen at all.
  • Nitrogen is ammoniacal: All half a percent of it, which is the point of the formula.
  • Magnesium and sulfur on the panel: A quarter percent magnesium and three tenths of a percent sulfur.
  • Carries 0.75% chlorine: From the potassium chloride, worth knowing on a recirculating system.
  • A two stage schedule: Alongside the base feed for a week, then on its own for one.
  • Five millilitres per gallon: One teaspoon per gallon, at both stages of the schedule.
  • Never with Dry KoolBloom: The manufacturer rule out combining the two phosphorus finishers.
  • Any medium on the list: Rockwool, coco, peat lite, soil and water culture are all named.
