What the Grodan Gro-Smart Tray Holds on Each Side
Turn it over and it becomes a different tray. The 78 cell face takes 1.5 inch A-OK starter plugs or round Macroplugs, one to a cell, held upright and square. Flip it and the open mesh face carries sheets of A-OK, Mini-Blocks or full Gro-Blocks, with nothing underneath to trap water. That is two propagation stages covered by one piece of plastic. It is why this ends up being the tray a room buys by the dozen. It drops into a standard 10 x 20 flat, so the domes and heat mats already on the bench still fit.
Why a Clone Tray Insert Beats a Bare Flat
The point of it is height. Media sitting flat on the bottom of a tray sits in whatever has drained out of it. Stone wool holds water well enough already without a reservoir underneath. Lifting it clear lets air reach the base of the plug and lets runoff go somewhere other than back into the root zone. The second reason is sanitation. It is hard plastic, so it washes by hand or goes through a dishwasher between rounds. That matters more in propagation than anywhere else in a grow. Made by Grodan in terra-cotta, and priced such that replacing a cracked one is not a decision.
