Grodan A-OK Loose Plugs for High-Volume Propagation

This carton holds 2,310 Grodan A-OK 1.5 in stone wool starter plugs, packed loose with no sheets or shrink-wrap. Each plug measures 36 x 36 x 40 mm, or about 1.4 x 1.4 x 1.6 in, and comes pre-cut with a tapered bottom. A small pre-made hole in the top takes a seed or the end of a cutting. Grodan packs them loose for growers who prefer to saturate plugs as individual pieces. Loose plugs also slot into whatever propagation tray or insert a room already runs. Stone wool is spun from basalt rock into a fibrous block that holds water and air at the same time. The fibers run evenly through each plug, so a batch wets and dries at a steady, predictable rate. These plugs are sized to transplant straight into larger Grodan Gro-Blocks once roots appear. The full carton weighs about 23.1 lb and measures roughly 20 x 25 x 20.5 in. That makes it a stock item for propagation rooms that turn over flats every week.

Working With Loose Rockwool Plugs

Loose rockwool plugs let you decide how many go in each tray and how wet each batch gets. Fill your propagation insert first and saturate the whole tray at once, or soak plugs in a tub and place them after. Grodan's guidance calls for a solution near pH 5.5 and an EC of about 1.5 mS/cm or more. Soak until air bubbles stop rising, then drain well. A plug that drips under a light squeeze is still too wet for young roots. Weigh a few wet plugs to confirm the batch took on solution evenly. Stick cuttings into the hole, firm the plug around the stem, and set the tray under a dome. Seeds go one or two to a plug, pressed just below the surface. Keep the carton closed between batches so the fibers stay clean and dry. Dust or spilled nutrient on a dry plug can throw off the first soak. When roots poke through the sides, move each plug into a pre-soaked block. Small runs are easy too. Pull only what the next batch needs and leave the rest boxed.
