A safety float inside the lid shuts the whole system down before a failed level switch can put water on the floor. This Ebb and Gro Controller runs two 250 GPH pumps off a Grasslin timer.

What the Ebb and Gro Controller Carries

The controller is a 7 gal bucket that sits between the reservoir and the growing modules. Two submersible pumps come with it, each rated 250 GPH. A Grasslin timer sets the fill cycles, and the unit falls back to drain between them. Heavy-duty float switches decide when and where water moves. An adjustable ladder-style level control sets how high each container fills, and it slides up or down its pole. Underneath that sits the part worth paying for. A safety overflow float switch is fitted inside the top of the controller bucket. If an upper float fails, that switch shuts the system down before the room floods. A switch-error light on the panel says a fault has happened rather than leaving it silent. The controller is rated for up to 24 five-gallon modules, or up to 48 two-gallon ones. The box carries the bucket, the timer, both pumps, half-inch tubing, three-quarter straight connectors and three-quarter to half-inch reducers. Power is 110 to 120 V at 60 Hz, indoor use only. The unit measures 19 by 13 by 16 in and ships at 20 lb. Warranty is three years, against part number GFO7CB and barcode 638104006439.

Setting Up a 7 Gallon Controller Bucket and Its Modules

A 7 gallon controller bucket only works as well as the surface it stands on. Buckets, controller and reservoir all sit on one flat level, with the tubing lying flat between them. Keep the controller within ten feet of the reservoir. Set each upper float stop at least three inches below the rim of its bucket. Media goes to roughly an inch below that rim, and transplants sit three inches down so the flood reaches the roots. Spread the buckets evenly across the outlets, because an unbalanced run fills and drains slowly. Cap whatever is unused, pairing an even number of outlets with tubing or crimping a lone outlet shut. Timer increments are fifteen minutes each, pulled out with a fingernail. Run one full fill and drain as a test before any plants go in. Most plants want three or four cycles a day, and more than that wears the pumps out early. Change the solution every seven to ten days, and leave the nutrient alone while buckets are filling or draining. The vacuum-break elbow has a small hole that has to point down into the reservoir. Clean the pump filters, that hole and the float switches on a schedule. A bucket that stops filling is almost always a clog, and the fix is to flush the fitting and tubing feeding it.
