What the Grow1 Weed Mat Barrier Is Made Of
The roll is 100 percent non-recycled polypropylene at 100 gsm, which Grow1 also states as 3 oz per square yard. It is woven so that air, water and nutrient pass through while light to the soil is cut off. This one is black, 6 ft wide and 300 ft long, 1,800 sq ft to the roll. Grow1 prints green guide lines along the fabric. A planting row stays straight and the spacing stays even from one end of the roll to the other. Grow1 sells it for agricultural use: greenhouse floors, hoop houses, outdoor beds, container pads and the walkways between them. A weed under fabric gets no light and dies, and a seed that lands on top finds nothing to root into. That is how a grow stays clean without a herbicide. Water drains through the weave rather than pooling the way it does on plastic sheeting, and the soil underneath keeps breathing. Black is the colour for blocking light hardest and for warming the soil under it. A black floor in a greenhouse absorbs the sun and gives it back to the roots in spring. It also hides the stains a working floor picks up. In a hot climate that same warmth needs watching, since a dark floor can push a root zone past where a summer crop wants it. This width covers a 4 ft bed with a foot of walkway either side, or two rows of pots with the aisle between them. Two runs side by side floor a house twice as wide with one seam down the middle. The fabric holds its shape under foot traffic, carts and pots, and Grow1 rates it for years of outdoor exposure. Anchor pins are not included and the roll ships at about 38 lb, so it goes on a cart, not a shoulder. The UPC on the black 6 ft roll is 850027863535.
Laying a Black Weed Matting So It Lasts More Than a Season
A black weed matting is only as good as the ground under it on the day it goes down. The job starts with a hoe, not a roll. Pull or cut every weed, rake the surface flat and knock down the clods. A lump under the fabric is where a cart wheel tears it. Roll the fabric out in the direction of the rows and let it relax in the sun for an hour before pinning. Cold polypropylene lays flatter once it has warmed. Overlap seams by at least 6 in and pin the overlap every yard, with the pins through both layers. Two runs give a house one seam down the centre, and that seam goes under the walkway, not under a bed. Pin the edges every yard and the middle of a wide run every two, with a pin long enough to hold in the local soil. A sandy floor wants a longer pin than a clay one. Plant through it with a cut X rather than a round hole. Fold the flaps back under so the cut edges are not exposed to the sun. Follow the green guide lines for the row and the spacing, since that is the whole reason they are printed. Cover it with mulch, bark or rock where it is in full sun all season, because every polypropylene fabric lasts longer out of the light. Under a bench or in an aisle it can run bare. Hose a black floor down between crops. It hides dirt, which is useful for appearances and dangerous for sanitation if it is never cleaned. At the end of a season lift the pins, roll the fabric up dry and store it out of the sun. It goes down again the next year. A roll that is folded instead of rolled creases, and the crease is where it fails.
