A 3 ft roll is the width of a raised bed or a single row, and it goes down between beds without a cut. The Grow1 Weed Mat Barrier in white, 3 ft by 300 ft, is 900 sq ft of 100 gsm woven polypropylene on one roll.

What the Grow1 Weed Mat Barrier Is Made Of

The roll is 100 percent non-recycled polypropylene at 100 gsm, or 3 oz per square yard. It is woven so that air, water and nutrient pass through while light to the soil is cut off. This one is white, 3 ft wide and 300 ft long, 900 sq ft to the roll. Grow1 prints green guide lines along the fabric. A planting row stays straight and the spacing stays even from one end of the roll to the other. Grow1 makes it for agricultural use: greenhouse floors, hoop houses, outdoor beds, container pads and the walkways between them. A weed under fabric gets no light and dies, and a seed that lands on top finds nothing to root into. That is how a grow stays clean without a herbicide. Water drains through the weave rather than pooling the way it does on plastic sheeting, and the soil underneath keeps breathing. White is the colour for reflecting light back up into the canopy and for keeping the floor cool. A white floor under a greenhouse bench throws light onto the undersides of leaves and keeps the root zone cooler through a summer. It shows spilled media and dropped leaves, so they get swept. In a cold spring that same reflection needs allowing for, since a pale floor gives the soil no help warming up. This width is the between-beds roll, the single-row roll and the one that goes down a greenhouse aisle without a cut. It is the lightest to carry, and a 300 ft length runs the whole side of a hoop house from one roll. The fabric holds its shape under foot traffic, carts and pots, and it is rated for years of outdoor exposure. Anchor pins are not included, and at about 19 lb the roll is a one-person carry. The UPC on the white 3 ft roll is 850027863566.

Laying a White Landscape Fabric So It Lasts More Than a Season

A white landscape fabric is only as good as the ground under it on the day it goes down. The job starts with a hoe, not a roll. Pull or cut every weed, rake the surface flat and knock down the clods. A lump under the fabric is where a cart wheel tears it. Roll the fabric out in the direction of the rows and let it relax in the sun for an hour before pinning. Cold polypropylene lays flatter once it has warmed. Overlap seams by at least 6 in where two runs meet and pin the overlap every yard. A narrow run rarely needs a seam at all, which is the point of it between beds. Pin the edges every yard and the middle of a wide run every two, with a pin long enough to hold in the local soil. A sandy floor wants a longer pin than a clay one. Plant through it with a cut X rather than a round hole. Fold the flaps back under so the cut edges are not exposed to the sun. Follow the green guide lines for the row and the spacing, since that is the whole reason they are printed. Cover it with mulch, bark or rock where it is in full sun all season, because every polypropylene fabric lasts longer out of the light. Under a bench or in an aisle it can run bare. Sweep a white floor often. It shows every leaf and spill, which is useful for sanitation and tiresome if it is ignored. At the end of a season lift the pins, roll the fabric up dry and store it out of the sun. It goes down again the next year. A roll that is folded instead of rolled creases, and the crease is where it fails.
