What the Hanna pHep Actually Reads

pH covers 0.0 to 14.0 in tenths, at ±0.2 accuracy. Temperature runs 0.0 to 50.0 °C alongside it and compensates the pH reading as it goes. It runs on a single CR2032 coin cell for roughly 1000 hours. At 75 g it is lighter and slimmer than the four-cell pens, which is what you notice clipped to a pocket all day.

The junction is cloth rather than ceramic, which gives more surface for fertiliser salts to work past before it clogs. When readings start wandering, pull a little more of the fibre through and the junction is renewed. Calibration is automatic on two points, and the tester already knows the 4.01, 7.01 and 10.01 buffers. Set the shutdown to 8 or 60 minutes, or switch it off entirely for bench work. The accuracy is the catch. This is the loosest of the Hanna pens, and it will not separate a reservoir at 5.8 from one at 6.0. Treat it as a field pen for source water and quick checks, and keep a tighter meter for the tank.
