Why Happy Frog Japanese Maple Is a Separate Blend
Plenty of gardeners feed a maple with whatever all purpose bag is open. This blend exists because a group of plants prefers a lower pH root zone than most vegetables do. A general fertiliser does not account for that. FoxFarm names the group directly: Japanese maples, lilies, evergreens, hydrangeas, junipers, dogwoods and flowering ornamentals. The analysis reads 4-3-4, which is gentler than a general purpose blend and balanced between nitrogen and potassium rather than nitrogen led. Mycorrhizal fungi are included, which FoxFarm describes as increasing root efficiency and supporting nutrient and water uptake. The bag is OMRI Listed and registered with the California Department of Food and Agriculture as an organic input material.
Applying a Japanese Maple Fertilizer Through the Season
Rates follow the size of what you are feeding. A new container planting takes two tablespoons per gallon of soil, mixed through at the start. A new in-ground planting takes half a cup per five gallons of soil mixture, with another half cup worked in around the base. Established plants are top dressed monthly by height. One cup covers a plant one to two feet tall. Two to three feet takes one and a half cups, three to five feet takes two cups, and anything taller takes three. Scratch it into the top inch of soil and water it in properly. Two honest notes belong here. A dry organic blend releases through soil biology. It is slow in cold ground and faster once the soil warms, which suits the way maples wake up in spring. And feeding a maple hard is a mistake regardless of the product, since the fine leaf edges scorch before anything else shows.
