Running a Commercial Grade Freeze Dryer on a Bench

A commercial grade freeze dryer still needs a bench, a breaker and a drain plan before it earns anything. Harvest Right builds this one to stand on a countertop, a cart or a table rather than on a pallet. Leave clearance behind it for the vacuum hose, because the pump lives outside the cabinet. Put that pump where its noise and warmth are acceptable, and where the oil can be drained without moving the machine. Load the trays evenly and to a consistent depth. A thick patch in one corner finishes hours after the rest and drags the whole cycle out behind it. Pre-freezing material before it goes in shortens the cycle and is worth the freezer space. Resist opening the door mid-cycle. Breaking vacuum costs whatever time it takes to pull back down, and on a full load that is not trivial. Oil service is the maintenance that actually gets skipped. Used pump oil holds water, and water in the oil raises the lowest pressure the pump can reach. A pump that cannot pull deep enough turns a twenty-hour cycle into a forty-hour one with no other symptom. Filter or change the oil on schedule, and keep a spare filter on the shelf.
