When a Root Riot tray has rooted out and been transplanted, this bag of 50 cubes refills its insert for the next run. Each cube is a 36 mm block of naturally composted, fine-milled sphagnum peat. It is formed into a spongy plug with a hole already pressed into the top. That sponge holds water and air at the same time, so a fresh cut stays moist without sitting in a saturated medium. The cubes ship pre-moistened and pH balanced at 6.0, ready to use the day the bag is opened. Let them come up to room temperature before the first cutting goes in. Take softwood tips, cut diagonally just below a node and strip all but a couple of leaves. Dip the cut end in rooting gel, then set it into the hole just far enough to stand on its own. Forcing a stem deeper crushes the sponge that holds the air. Mist the cuttings, cover the tray with a clear dome and keep misting every other day to hold humidity. Seeds drop into the same hole and go somewhere warm until they sprout.

A cube that dries out in storage comes back after a soak in a bowl of lukewarm water. Let it drain until it feels spongy rather than dripping. Unused cubes belong sealed in their bag, somewhere cool and dark, so the rest stay ready for the next round. The cube keeps its shape through rooting, which makes handling and transplanting the young plant easy. Once roots show through the sides, it moves whole into soil, coco or any hydroponic system.
