What the Big Boy Water Filter Moves in an Hour

Four hundred and twenty gallons. That is 7 GPM through two oversized housings on 1 in inlet and outlet, which is plumbing rather than a hose thread. Stage one is a pleated cleanable sediment cartridge. Stage two is green coconut carbon, rated for 25,000 gallons before it is spent.

Running It as a Whole House Filter Rather Than a Hose Filter

The ports decide that. At 1 in in and out it plumbs into a line. A garden hose connection is a separate kit rather than something in the box. HydroLogic rates it at 99% of chlorine and 95% of sediment, rust and silt, along with VOCs, mercury, lead and PCBs. Pressure gauges sit either side of the housings. Those are the useful part in service. A growing gap between the two readings is the sediment cartridge loading up. That cartridge rinses rather than gets replaced, on a roughly six month change. Chloramine is a separate matter. The standard carbon is not rated for it. The ChloraShield cartridge is the part that handles chloramine, at 7,000 gallons rather than 25,000. At 30 lb and 29.5 by 16 by 8.5 in this is a wall fixture, on the aluminium bracket supplied.

Key Features

  • 7 GPM, 420 GPH: The flow that separates it from the hose mounted units in the line.
  • 25,000 gallon carbon: Green coconut carbon, replaced once it has passed that volume.
  • 1 in inlet and outlet: Plumbed in. A garden hose connection is a separate kit.
  • Gauges either side: A growing gap between them is the sediment cartridge loading up.
  • Cleanable sediment stage: Rinse it rather than replace it, on a roughly six month change.
  • Chloramine wants ChloraShield: The standard carbon is not rated for it. That cartridge is.
  • 30 lb on a wall bracket: Aluminium, so it does not rust behind a filter that is always wet.
