Two reasons, both practical. A 6 in square is wide enough to put a hand and snips through at harvest. The net comes off in one piece instead of being cut away. And fewer, thicker strands across a span hold tension under a loaded canopy rather than sagging into it. The material is non-woven high density polyethylene, an extruded grid rather than a knitted soft mesh. It keeps its shape under weight, which is what you want for training, though it is stiffer to weave branches through than a soft net. It does not rot and it is not biodegradable, so it comes back next cycle. Strip the plant matter, then soak it 20 to 30 minutes in water with hydrogen peroxide or dilute bleach. Hang the first layer 8 to 12 in above the containers in veg. Put a second 6 to 8 in above that for a heavy flowering canopy.
