Why 6 in Trellis Netting Is the Default Square
You can get a hand through it. That is most of the answer. A six inch opening takes a hand and a tomato back out without a fight. The net stays in place through picking, rather than being cut off the row. It also lists below the tighter mesh at this size, because there is less string in the same area.
What You Give Up on a Wider Reach-through Mesh
Contact points. This grid holds roughly a third as many per square foot as a 3.5 in square. A heavy truss can push a stem through the opening instead of resting on it. On a dense planting, or a crop trained flat, the tighter mesh is the better tool. For most flowering and vining crops the wider square is the standard, and the access is worth more than the extra support. The net is soft woven polyester, non-burning where it crosses tender growth. Hydrofarm publishes no rated load, so keep tie points every 12 to 18 in. Hang the first layer 8 to 16 in above the medium in late veg. Add a second 6 to 8 in higher if the canopy calls for it.
Key Features
- Reach-through square: A hand and fruit pass back out, so the net survives harvest.
- 60 ft in one piece: A long bay or four short runs, with no joins along the length.
- The lower list at 60 ft: Less string per square foot than the 3.5 in version of the same size.
- Fewer contact points: About a third of the 3.5 in grid. Heavy trusses can push through.
- Woven polyester: Settles around a stem under load rather than holding a rigid grid.
- 5 ft wide over a 4 ft bench: About 6 in a side to tie off outside the growing area.
- No published load rating: Tie points every 12 to 18 in are what control sag under a canopy.
