Ahead of the membrane, in the stainless housing. This is a 20 in by 2.5 in melt-blown polypropylene cartridge rated at 5 micron. It is the pre-filter HydroLogic runs on its industrial and heavy industrial systems. The housing it drops into is stainless, not the clear plastic bowl of a domestic filter. It catches sand, rust and silt so the membrane does not have to.

How Often a 5 Micron Pre-Filter Wants Changing

Monthly is the published interval, or sooner once differential pressure across the cartridge climbs past 10%. That second trigger is the one to watch, because it tracks your actual water rather than the calendar. Depth filters like this one are not cleanable. Particles load through the thickness of the media instead of sitting on a pleated surface, so rinsing does not recover them. A cleanable pleated cartridge is a different part entirely. Two diameters exist in the range: this slim 2.5 in body and a 4.5 in version for the larger housings. Both are 20 in long, which is exactly why the wrong one gets picked.
