What Jack's Nutrients 5-12-26 Part A Supplies
The label reads 5 percent nitrogen, all of it nitrate, 12 percent available phosphate and 26 percent soluble potash. Then come the parts that make it a complete Part A rather than a bare NPK: 6.2 percent magnesium, all water soluble, and 8.5 percent sulfur. The micro package carries iron at 0.3 percent on three chelates, DTPA, EDTA and EDDHA. Iron stays available from a low pH up through the range where a single chelate lets go. Manganese is 0.05 percent, copper 0.02 percent and zinc 0.015 percent, each on EDTA, with boron at 0.05 percent and molybdenum at 0.02 percent. The sources are potassium nitrate, magnesium sulfate, monopotassium phosphate, the chelated metals, boric acid and ammonium molybdate. There is no ammonium and no urea in the bag, which keeps the root zone from acidifying in a recirculating system. There is also no calcium, by design. Calcium rides in Part B, the 15-0-0 calcium nitrate, because calcium and phosphate cannot share a concentrated stock without dropping out as a white solid. That split is the whole logic of a two-part feed and the reason the 5-12-26 pairs with a Part B rather than standing alone. The 25 lb bag is item 79030 in the FeED line. The 3-2-1 on the label is the program: 3 parts of this bag, 2 parts of calcium nitrate and 1 part of Epsom salt by weight. At the label rate of 13 dry ounces per 100 gallons the Part A delivers 50 ppm of nitrogen. The same rate makes 3.78 g per gallon for a small reservoir. With 9 ounces of Part B in the same hundred gallons the solution lands at 150 ppm nitrogen and 120 ppm calcium. The salts dissolve fully, faster in warm water, and run clean through injectors and drip lines.
Mixing a Two-Part Hydroponic Base Fertilizer Without Precipitate
A two-part hydroponic base fertilizer is only two parts until the moment of mixing, and the sequence is what keeps it clear. Dissolve the 5-12-26 first in warm water, salts into the water, and give it time to go transparent. Add any extra Epsom salt next, at 1 dry ounce per 100 gallons for every 7.5 ppm of magnesium wanted. The calcium nitrate goes in last, into the full volume. Through an injector the two parts live in separate stock tanks, at 13 ounces of Part A per gallon for a 1:100 unit. They only meet in the irrigation line at final strength. Check the injector setting before the first run, because a 1:50 unit fed a 1:100 stock doubles the feed. Measure EC after the three parts are in, and pH after that. Nitrate feeds drift pH upward over a week in a recirculating tank, so the check is weekly, not once. Watch the run-off EC against the feed EC in coco and soilless media. A gap that widens means salt is accumulating and the next event wants a higher drain fraction. Keep the stock tanks covered and out of sunlight, since a clear concentrate in the light grows algae. Store the bag closed and dry. Potassium nitrate and magnesium sulfate both pull moisture from the air, and a bag left open in a wet room cakes before it is empty. Weigh the dose rather than scooping it. A bag this size runs a room for months, and a scale is what keeps month four the same as month one.
Key Features
- 5-12-26, all nitrate nitrogen: No ammonium, no urea, for a stable root zone in recirculating systems.
- 6.2 percent magnesium, 8.5 percent sulfur: The secondary nutrients a bare NPK leaves out.
- Iron on three chelates: DTPA, EDTA and EDDHA, with manganese, zinc and copper on EDTA.
- The 3 in 3-2-1: Three parts of this bag to two of calcium nitrate and one of Epsom salt.
- Label rate: 13 oz per 100 gal for 50 ppm N, or 3.78 g per gallon.
- No calcium, on purpose: Calcium comes from Part B so neither stock precipitates.
- Fully soluble: Clears in warm water and runs through injectors and drip.
- 25 lb bag: JR Peters FeED item 79030.
