What the microCLONE Seed Starter Kit Is For
Old seed fails for two reasons and this kit addresses both. The first is surface contamination, where fungal spores on the seed coat outcompete a slow embryo before it ever breaks. The kit handles that with a wash vial and a surface sterilising powder, soaking the seed for around thirty minutes before anything else happens. The second is dormancy and low vigour, which is what the hydrating solution is for. Hold the seed at 76 F, or 27 C, until it sinks. Sinking is the signal that it has taken up enough water to be worth planting. Seed that sinks goes into sterilised coco coir. Ten tubes of sterile germination media travel in a ten-site tray. Two further tubes carry embryo rescue agar, for seed that will not start by any ordinary route. Forceps, twenty-five metres of sealing tape and an instruction manual complete the box.
Running Sterile Seed Germination in a Real Room
Sterility is the part people underestimate, and it is the difference between this working and this turning into a tray of mould. Work in front of a HEPA filter, in a clean room with a fluorescent or LED shelf around six watts per square foot. A canner-size pressure cooker or an InstaPot is needed to sterilise tubes and media, and it is not optional equipment. A pH meter is worth having alongside it. Once a seedling is actively growing it gets inoculated with beneficial microorganisms. From there it moves into a larger container and rejoins a normal propagation routine. The honest position on this kit is that it is a rescue tool rather than a production one. Seed that germinates happily on a heat mat does not need any of this. The process costs time and equipment that only pay off when the genetics are irreplaceable.
