Milwaukee pH600 Pocket pH Pen

This is a pocket-size digital pH pen that reads from 0.0 to 14.0 pH in 0.1 pH steps. Milwaukee Instruments rates its accuracy at ±0.1 pH at 25°C. Calibration is a single point at pH 7.01, set by turning a small trimmer on the back with a screwdriver. The large liquid crystal display shows the reading clearly while the pen sits in a sample. A pocket clip keeps it handy on a shirt or clipboard during a walk-through. Three 1.5V alkaline batteries power it for up to 700 hours of use. The pen measures 150 x 30 x 24 mm and weighs about 85 g. It works in surroundings from 5 to 50°C and up to 95% relative humidity. A protective cap covers the sensing probe between readings. Buffer sachets make calibration quick on the bench or in the grow room. It suits growers who want a quick, readable pH check without a bench meter.

Keeping a Hydroponic pH Tester Reading True

A hydroponic pH tester only helps if it is calibrated and stored well. Calibrate before the first use and then every week or two with fresh pH 7.01 buffer. Dip the pen to the maximum immersion line, let the reading settle, and turn the trimmer until the display reads 7.0. Always use fresh buffer, since a used sachet drifts and pulls the calibration with it. To take a reading, remove the cap, switch on and stir gently in the sample until the number stops moving. Rinse the probe with clean water after every reading. Store it with a few drops of storage solution in the cap. Distilled or deionized water should never be used for storage, as it pulls ions out of the glass. White crystals around the cap are normal and dissolve when rinsed. Large swings, around half a pH unit, usually point to a dry electrode, low batteries or a missed calibration. Mix nutrients first, then check pH last, since each additive shifts the reading.
